Academic Bio

Kara A. Peruccio is a PhD candidate in Islamic History. Her dissertation, tentatively titled “Womanhood Mediterranean Style,” is a comparative history of Italian and Turkish women authors in the 1920s and early 1930s and explores the relationship between gender, literature, and authoritarian politics. Her teaching and research interests include Modern Middle Eastern History, the 20th century Mediterranean, cultural history, and comparative authoritarianisms. Kara received an MA from the University of Chicago Center for Middle Eastern Studies (2014) and a BA with Honors in History from Wake Forest University (2011). Before graduate school, she held a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Uşak, Turkey.
