Academic Bio

Zach Winters is a PhD student in Islamic History and Civilization. His main research interests include 15th-century Iranian history, messianic and popular religious movements in Islam, the role of the esoteric sciences in late-medieval Islamic thought, and the intersection between Sufism and political legitimacy in the early modern period. He also works on the topic of intellectual and cultural links between Iran and the Indian subcontinent. His current projects focus primarily on the Mushaʿshaʿ movement of Khūzistān in the 15th and 16th centuries.
