Academic Bio

Chelsie May is a PhD student in modern Middle East history (B.A., UCLA, M.A., Brandeis). Her research interests include social differences such as gender and race as categories of analysis in history, Arab Jewish history and Iraqi history. Her dissertation is a gendered social history of Iraq's Jews (20th century). Chelsie's article "'Girls of the Eastern Communities': The Intersectionality of Female Arab Jewish Immigrants, Israel-Palestine 1947-1960" can be found in the January 2018 publication of The Journal of Jewish Identities. Her University service includes co-organizing the Middle East History and Theory workshop. She has presented at the annual conferences of the Middle East Studies Association and the Association of Jewish Studies. Her research has been supported by grants from UChicago's Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture, the Nicholson Center for British Studies, the Center for Jewish Studies and the Hadassah Brandeis Institute.
